Striving against the self (Jihad al-Nafs) is one of the highest forms of jihad and among the most impactful in a Muslim’s life, because it is the struggle in which a person confronts his weaknesses, desires, and the Inclinations toward wrongdoing within him. It is an inner battle unseen by people, a battle without applause or recognition, yet it is greater with Allah than the jihad of the sword, for it is a daily fight that never ends—its purpose is to refine the soul, purify the heart, and reach the true level of servitude to Allah.
The human self naturally swings between laziness and comfort, the pull of desires, and the pursuit of worldly gain. For this reason, a Muslim must watch over his soul with awareness and discipline it until it submits to the command of Allah. Allah the Almighty says:
“And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways.” (Al-‘Ankabut 29:69)
This verse affirms that striving is the path to guidance, and Allah opens the doors of goodness for those who struggle against themselves, resist temptations, and remain firm on His obedience.
Jihad al-Nafs begins with knowing one’s flaws, for the soul cannot be refined until its weaknesses are recognized—those things that pull it toward heedlessness and distance from Allah. Then comes the struggle against one’s desires (hawā), the most dangerous enemy of a person, for desires can beautify falsehood, justify sin, and cloak worldly temptations in the garment of truth. Allah says:
“But as for he who feared standing before his Lord and restrained the soul from desires, then indeed Paradise will be his refuge.” (An-Naz‘aat 79:40–41)
Thus, restraining the soul from its desires forms the core of jihad, and it is the way to salvation and eternal bliss.
Striving against the self is built on three pillars: purification (tazkiyah), self-accountability (muḥāsabah), and watchfulness (murāqabah).
Purification is cleansing the heart of arrogance, envy, hypocrisy, and all spiritual diseases. Self-accountability means standing before one’s soul with honesty, evaluating actions, correcting mistakes, and increasing in good. Watchfulness is the awareness that Allah sees everything, in secret and in public, which leads to upright conduct and a steady heart.
This type of jihad grants inner strength that helps a believer face trials and navigate life’s challenges with calm and certainty. A person who strives against his soul Is not shaken by temptations or swayed by illusions of worldly pleasure, because he has learned to prioritize Allah’s pleasure over all desires and to make the Hereafter his ultimate goal. Allah says:
“Indeed, the soul is ever inclined to evil, except for those upon whom my Lord has mercy.” (Yusuf 12:53)
The soul naturally leans toward wrongdoing, but Allah’s mercy is granted to those who strive and draw near to Him with sincerity and righteous deeds.
Jihad al-Nafs is not a temporary phase but a lifelong journey that accompanies a believer until he meets Allah. The more a servant struggles against himself, the closer he becomes to his Lord, gaining peace of heart, clarity of vision, and a strong will. This jihad produces noble character and righteous behavior, spreading benefit to both the individual and society, and forming people with determination, purity, and a free will not enslaved by desire or impulse.
In conclusion, striving against the self is the foundation of all reform, the source of all goodness, and the secret of steadfastness on the path of faith. It elevates a person in rank, keeps him firm on the way to Allah, and protects him from the pitfalls of worldly temptations while nurturing true servitude and humanity in their highest form.
