Ethical Values in Business Transactions in Islam

In Islam, trade is not merely a means of gaining wealth or achieving material benefits; it is a significant field where moral values and faith are tested. The Muslim merchant is not only seeking profit but also practicing worship through honesty, justice, and fairness in dealings. Islam did not separate worship from daily life; rather, it made ethics the spirit that governs all human activities.

Truthfulness and trustworthiness are the foundation of business transactions in Islam. Allah says:

“And whenever you speak, speak justly, even if a near relative is concerned; and fulfill the covenant of Allah.” [Al-An‘am: 152].

Justice, therefore, is not optional but an obligation that must be upheld even against one’s own interests.

The Qur’an strongly condemned fraud and cheating in trade. Allah says:

“And give full measure and weight with justice. We burden not any person, but that which he can bear.” [Al-An‘am: 152].

And He also says:

“Woe to Al-Mutaffifun (those who give less in measure and weight), * Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure, * And when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.” [Al-Mutaffifin: 1-3].

These verses emphasize that cheating in trade is not a minor fault but a form of injustice and corruption that incurs divine punishment.

Islam further commanded fairness in business by maintaining balance in all dealings. Allah says:

“And establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance.” [Ar-Rahman: 9].

Thus, trade in Islam is based on equity and fairness that secure the rights of both parties.

Likewise, Islam prohibited usury (riba), which exploits the poor and destabilizes society. Allah says:

“O you who believe! Eat not Riba (usury) doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.” [Al-‘Imran: 130].

Therefore, business in Islam is not only an economic activity but also a moral mission grounded in justice, honesty, fairness, and responsibility. Whoever abides by these principles turns trade into an act of worship that pleases Allah and serves society.
